Construction crews often need to work in challenging terrain and ecologically sensitive areas. In many situations, mats and temporary roadways constructed of heavy hardwood timbers are the answer. However, not every job site calls for such robust solutions. In these instances, contractors can accomplish just as much and save money with cross-laminated timber (CLT) access mats.

As one of the most lightweight mats in the market, YAK MAT’s CLT mat weighs two-thirds less than a standard hardwood timber mat. This provides a significant reduction in freight charges.

These lightweight CLT access mats provide several advantages over heavier alternatives. These include:

• Manufactured for flat surfaces
• Light weight reduces transportation costs

As versatile as these mats are, there are certain instances where these are not suited for use. These include:

• Not to be used as crane work pads
• Not for use on terrain with high slope
• Not for use when digging ditches or laying pipe off the side of an access roadway

While these features make cross-laminated timber mats a good choice for areas with relatively level terrain they do have a tendency to float on mud and water, and are not recommended for use in swamps or wetlands. Their unique fabrication also means they cannot be repaired in the field, only replaced.
